Selections of these documents are available for you to peruse directly from this portal. EU as a World Player Find out more on the EU \'s external Relations and how the European Union works with other countries throughout the world to successfully pool economic and political resources in the common interest. This document provides an insight on how the EU can serve as a model for integration between countries in other regions of the world. The EU Economy Economic and social progress and constant improvements in living and working conditions are fundamental objectives for the European Union. Experience over the last five decades shows clearly that economic integration (removing barriers to the free movement of goods, services, money and people) gives Europe a much better chance of creating jobs and sustainable growth. Much has already been achieved: the customs union, then the single market and, most recently, economic and monetary union (EMU). The European Union or the EU is an intergovernmental and supranational union of 25 democratic countries known as member states. The European Union was established under that name in 1992. by the Treaty on European Union (the Maastricht Treaty). However, many aspects of the Union existed before that date through a series of predecessor relationships, dating back to 1951. The European Union \'s activities cover all areas of public policy, from health and economic policy to foreign affairs and defence. However, the extent of its powers differs greatly between areas. Depending on the area in question, the EU may therefore resemble: a federation (for example, on monetary affairs, agricultural, trade and environmental policy, economic and social policy) a confederation (for example, on home affairs) an international organization (for example, in foreign affairs) A key activity of the EU is the establishment and administration of a common single market, consisting of a customs union, a single currency (adopted by 12 of the 25 member states), a Common Agricultural Policy, a common trade policy, and a Common Fisheries Policy. The most important EU institutions are the Council of the European Union, the European Commission, the European Parliament and the European Court of Justice. European Bank for Reconstruction and Development was established in 1991.The EBRD is the largest single investor in the region and mobilizes significant foreign direct investment beyond its own financing. It is owned by 60 countries and two intergovernmental institutions. But despite its public sector shareholders, it invests mainly in private enterprises, usually together with commercial partners. It provides project financing for banks, industries and businesses, both new ventures and investments in existing companies. It also works with publicly owned companies, to support privatization, restructuring state-owned firms and improvement of municipal services. The Bank uses its close relationship with governments in the region to promote policies that will bolster the business environment. The mandate of the EBRD stipulates that it must only work in countries that are committed to democratic principles. Respect for the environment is part of the strong corporate governance attached to all EBRD investments. Register now and ensure your place on SEFICT! F rom 22-24 May in Belgrade’s Hotel Intercontinental, was held the fifth International Assembly of representatives of Information and Communication Technologies from areas of former Yugoslavia. This time next to the achievements from Slovenia, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, we had a chance to see a great number of presentations from other parts of the world: Australia, Argentina, Tunisia, Lithuania, England, Belgium, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Greece, Hungary, Bulgaria... The most significant vendors of ICT equipment in our market, were present at the Conference: SAP, IBIS-SYS a Siemens company, IBM, Fujistu Siemens, Cisco, Allied Telesyn, Bull, Microsoft, S&T, Oracle and others. SEFICT was supported by domestic institutions: Ministry of Commerce and Tourism, Belgrade Chamber of Economy and Serbian Chamber of Economy. The minister of Economy and Tourism in the Government of Serbia, Mr. Bojan dr Dimitrijevic, opened the fifth SEFICT Conference - South East Europe Forum for Information and Communication Technologies, and emphasised his pleasure that this year’s Forum, after being held twice in Herceg Novi and twice in Dubrovnik, is finally held in Belgrade. Mr. Dimitrijević also expressed hope and belief that we will be successfull in getting the organisation of such a valuable assembly for our country in the forthcoming years. In his address speach, President of JISA – Union of ICT Society of our country and General Secretary of SEFICT, Mr. Djordje Dukic pointed out that this year’s Conference, with more than 80 foreigners and with the interest shown by countries from this region, demonstrates a turning-point in further development of SEFICT - South East Europe Forum ICT, which from primarily and qualitatitvely realised idea of improving international cooperation in the region developed from the initial definitive obligatory: connection of the region with the European Union and other parts of the world. During SEFICT Conference 87 presentations were held on Plenary and Special Sessions, as well as a great number of in advance agreed Bilateral Discussions. The general impression is that despite extremely interesting topics and very interesting speakers the Conference was not visited by an appropriate number of domestic representatives of Commerce, Education and Science but despite that a special attention and significant attendance attracted two “round tables” held the first and second day of the SEFICT Conference. Round Table ECDL First, the topic EDUCATION AND EUROPEAN STANDARDIZATION was opened by the executive director of CEPIS Office - Council of European Professional Informatics Societies, Mr. Alexander Bojanowsky, where it was stressed that CEPIS with cooperation of European Committee has established ECDL Foundation with the purpose to balance informatic education among member countries, and that the implementation of ECDL certificates has reached a much bigger application than expected with a clear concept and practical use, with the result that this certificate today is used in over 140 countries of the world, which with the fact that 6 milion are certified, places it at a highly superior level which is often obligatory in most European countries. With this topic were presented two ECDL Test Centres from Croatia: ELIT TRADE, presented by Mr. Vladimir Batusic, the executive director, who pointed out their significant results on the testing of scholastic personnel of Croatian schools financed by the Government of Croatia, petrochemical industry INA, and many other enterprises and associations. The Test Center ALGEBRA from Zagreb, got its first ATES certificate ECDL Foundation for automatic ECDL testing in one of the Slav languages. This application, during the two years work of creating and harmonizing it, has finally got ready for an experimental period which is to last untill the end of this year. Thereafter a final correction will be made and it will be included in everyday work. All interested ECDL Test Centers in Serbia and Montenegro, will be able to get a temporary code for performing trial testings and distance training. From domestic ECDL Test Centers at the Round Table were presented Integra as Centre with the most experience and many years work on reeducation of military employees by implementing ECDL training donated by England, EBC with its results achieved in first year of the work, testing of employees of Ministry for Internationl Economy Relations, Serbiaroads, small and middle- sized enterprises, and first phases of creating domestic automatic testing for ECDL. This year the best result has been achieved by the ECDL Test Center of Economy Faculty of Subotica. Taking example from Italy, Hungary, Austria and other countries of the EU, the abbove faculty has completely modulated an exam program of Informatics with an ECDL Syllabus. In this way students are able to get faster an ECDL degree together with their economy degree, and at the same time get an acknowledgment of Informatics exam as one of the terms for any other faculty in EU countries.. Round Table ERP The Second Round table was organized by the Republican Agency for small and middle-sized enterprises, Belgrade Chamber of Economy and JISA INFO Magazine with the following topic SUPERVISION OF RESOURCES OF ENTERPRISES WITH HELP OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES FOR BUSINESSMEN OF SMALL AND MIDDLE SIZED ENTERPRISES.
